Where students go to for help

The student’s CCM Companion/AKO mentor is the first point of contact for the student and their whānau. The CCM Companion will give assistance and support in pastoral and academic matters throughout the student’s time at Sacred Heart. They will also know who to direct you to if you require further assistance.

Buses

Most buses arrive and depart from Firth Street. See Mr Lang for details as the bus timetables vary depending on your location.

Banned Items

Students are not permitted to have chewing gum, cigarettes, lighters, matches, alcohol, weapons, knives, illegal substances, vapes, vaping products and paraphernalia on site or on the school bus.

Lime Scooters – Students are not permitted to bring Lime scooters on site. The school does not condone students using this service.

Canteen

The canteen is open daily for purchasing food at interval and lunchtime. Students are not to go to the canteen during class or assembly time.

Careers Counselling

Students can make appointments to see the Careers Advisor by placing a request in the box outside the Careers office Rm 118.

Chewing Gum

Chewing gum is not permitted in the school.

Daily Notices

The daily notices are available from the Student Centre, the school website and on the display panel by the Student Centre. This is the main method of administrative communication with students. It is the student’s responsibility to check the notices every day.

Disabilities

Parents/caregivers should ensure the school is made aware of any disability, temporary or permanent, that a student has. Contact the Dean or Deputy Principal, Student Learning and Engagement.

Emergency Procedures

Emergency procedures are on the wall of every classroom and office. Emergency practice drills are held regularly. The assembly point is Steele Park. In the unlikely event of an emergency, every effort will be made to notify parents/caregivers via TxtStream. In the case of an earthquake, students and caregivers should have a personalised plan of where to meet if Steele Park is inaccessible.

Guidance Counselling

The College has two full-time Guidance Counsellors. Students can make appointments by placing a request in the box outside the counsellor’s office. All appointments are confidential.

Harassment and Bullying

Bully behaviour is not acceptable. Students should report incidents to someone they can trust.  For instance- a CCM Companion or mentor, a member of staff, a Student Wellbeing Leader, a Tuakana, school counsellor. If bullied online report it and contact Netsafe (see their website for details).

Homework and Study

Subject teachers issue homework. It is the student’s responsibility to complete homework. When homework is not issued, students should spend time revising work that has been covered in class.

Lockers

Lockers are allocated by the school office. Orders and payments are made with the Student Stationery fees. Students are responsible for keeping their lockers clean. Valuables are not to be held in lockers. Students are permitted to go their lockers before and after school and during the first and last five minutes of break. They should not go to their lockers between classes.

Lost Property

All personal property must be clearly marked. Students who find lost property are expected to hand it in to a Staff member or to the Student Centre. Those who have lost possessions should enquire at the Student Centre.

Out of Bounds

The staffroom and staff offices are to be entered only in the company of staff.

Payments

All payments for sports, subject fees, school trips and activities are made online through the My Monitor portal. For more information contact the Accounts Officer.

Printing Credit

Printing credit can be obtained from the Accounts Office located in the Administration building. Alternately, students can pay by eftpos – the machine is located by the Student Centre. Students will need their eftpos card and student ID number.

Property

School Property:

  • Students are to take care of all school property. In the event of willful damage to School property, the person or persons responsible shall be prepared to pay compensation.
  • Text books and Library books should be well cared for and returned when requested by the school.
  • Students are to respect our environment.

Personal Property:

  • All personal items e.g. articles of clothing, books, pens, bags, calculators, sporting equipment, must be clearly named. Lost and found items should be reported to the Student Centre.
  • All items of uniform must be clearly named.
  • The following should not be brought to School and if brought to School the School will accept no responsibility for them: Cameras or any other costly equipment, valuable watches, keepsake items.
  • All devices/electronic equipment is brought at the student’s own risk. The School will accept no responsibility for these items if lost or broken. The School will endeavour to recover the item/s if stolen.
  • Large sums of money are to be handed into the Student Centre for safekeeping. The School accepts no responsibility for loss.

Sick or injured while at school

A student who becomes sick or is injured while at school, should report to the Student Centre. Students are not to contact home or a parent on a personal device before reporting to the Student Centre. If the student needs to leave class, a note from the teacher is required and to be handed in at the Student Centre on arrival. Students are also required to sign the Health Centre book.

The school will inform the parent/caregiver that the student is injured/unwell.  If the illness or accident is of a nature where the student is unable to return to class, arrangements will be made for the student to go home. If a student goes home they must follow the school attendance process and sign out.

Yr 12 and 13 Study

This works on a light system, Red Light and Green Light. The group students are place in is determined by their on-going academic and pastoral performance. Performance is reviewed regularly, with the student placed according to the criteria of the corresponding group. This means student placement in a group is not permanent and is subject to change.

Green light – unsupervised study on/or off site.

Red light – supervised study on site. Attendance in the allocated study class/area is required. Support and assistance is available.

Students permitted to study off site are to sign in on arrival or return to school and sign out when leaving during school hours.

Valuables

The School accepts no responsibility for valuables or large sums of money. If such things must be brought to school, they should be handed in at the Student Centre for safe keeping.

Vehicles

Students are expected to follow all laws and regulations in the use of their vehicle. The School does not provide parking on site. The expectation is that students will be familiar with and observe Hamilton City Council parking regulations. Also, to be considerate to our local residents, their properties and access ways.

Visitors

Visitors must report to the School Office to sign in and receive a visitor’s pass. Informal visiting is not allowed. Students are discouraged from meeting parents/visitors in the car park or at the school gate. Please ask parents to come into the school and sign in. All visits are at the discretion of the college.
