Tena koutou katoa
Nga mihi nui ki a koutou

Nau mai, piki mai, whakatau mai nei – we welcome groups of new International students and staff to our kura.

Welcome back to all whānau – to another term of learning and caring! I am also back from sabbatical and, once again, extend my gratitude to the Board and Senior Leadership for their support, particularly Mr Rogers and Mrs Reid.

My time away was certainly restful and slower paced: I visited whānau in England, re-lived moments of my childhood in Dublin (and visited schools and convents), read a considerable amount (professional and personal) and visited schools in Melbourne. These schools have a proactive and responsive approach to Hauora, recognising that so much of what we already do in our school contributes to the spiritual, physical, emotional and socio-cultural development of our waahine taiohi. Some of the most valuable contributors to this dimension of school are ‘extracurricular’ so the challenge is to move towards ‘co-curricular’. This is not semantics; it’s a philosophical shift! More about this in the future, but in the meantime, a reflection to elevate your hauora:

Today is a new day!
You can start fresh, wipe the slate clean and begin again.
Today you can embrace kindness
practice compassion
stand up for justice
talk to strangers and make new friends.
You can ask for help
offer hope
and listen with your courageous heart (to the Whisperings of Grace).
You can work for the common good
love well
and today, and every day, YOU can be the change you want to see in the world.
Me aro ki te hā o Hineahuone!

Mauri ora!
Kia pai te mutunga wiki – have a good weekend.

The Great Australian Sports Tour

  • The Great Australian Sports Tour

Day 1: The Journey Begins

Excitement buzzed as our Australian Sports Tour students gathered, their bags packed and spirits high, ready for their long-anticipated Australian Sports Tour. As they boarded the bus to Auckland Airport, a sense of adventure filled the group – many of whom were about to experience international travel for the first time.

However, the journey had a rocky start. Just as the plane was about to take off, an unexpected malfunction forced the aircraft to sit on the tarmac for two hours. The initial nerves were palpable, but the girls found solace in the selection of movies on the flight. Despite the delay, the mood remained upbeat. When the plane finally touched down in Brisbane, the excitement rekindled as they climbed aboard their luxurious coach, heading towards their first hotel.

Day 2: A Tough Start

The sun rose on a new day, marking the start of their competitive matches. The hockey team faced off against Ipswich Hockey Association. Although the outcome wasn’t in their favour, the team’s spirit remained unshaken. They played with heart, and the day’s challenges only added to their resolve.

Day 3: Warner Bros Movie World

This day brought a thrilling diversion as the group descended upon Warner Bros Movie World. The theme park was a major hit, filled with exhilarating rides and fabulous attractions. Too many happy faces to count on this day!

Day 4: Toowoomba Showdown

Travelling to Toowoomba, the teams competed against The Glennie School in all four sports. The matches were fiercely contested. Hockey and Netball faced defeat, while the Rugby 7’s team split their games. However, Football emerged victorious with an impressive 8-2 win, lifting the spirits of the entire tour party.

Day 5: Rugby Triumphs and Shopping Fun

The next day, only the Rugby 7’s team was in action, playing two games against Toowoomba Anglican College. The girls cheered from the sidelines, creating an electric atmosphere. The Rugby team won both matches convincingly. The afternoon offered a much-needed shopping spree at a sprawling complex, allowing everyone to unwind and enjoy a bit of retail therapy.

Day 6: Downlands College Exchange

Returning to the Gold Coast, the group faced another set of matches at Downlands College. The sprawling campus welcomed them warmly, and the Football and Rugby teams excelled. Rugby won decisively with scores of 19-0 and 29-0, while Football narrowly edged out their opponents 2-1. However, the netball team faced a formidable challenge against one of the top netball schools in the state, coming up short in their matches.

Day 7: Victory and Beach Fun

The first half of the day began with matches against Somerville House. This time, the teams showcased their strength – Football won 4-0, Hockey triumphed 6-0, and both Netball teams secured convincing victories. The afternoon was a delightful mix of relaxation and fun at Surfers Paradise Beach, where shopping and swimming added a touch of leisure to their action-packed tour.

Day 8: Seaworld and Farewell

The final day was spent at Seaworld, a perfect way to wrap up an unforgettable trip. As the day drew to a close, the group returned to Brisbane Airport, reflecting on the experiences and memories they had created.

Throughout the trip, the students exhibited exemplary behaviour and sportsmanship. Their ability to bond across schools and support one another in various sports was heartwarming. The tour was not just a series of games but a journey filled with camaraderie, laughter, and learning. As they boarded their flight home, it was clear that this trip had been more than just a sports tour – iit was an adventure that would leave a lasting impression and cherished memories for years to come.

I would finally like to thank our parents, Libby and James Webber, Miha Brown, Jenni Cox, Audrey Quigley and Deputy Principal Kim McAlley, for their amazing support on this trip.

Future Leaders Academy

During the first week of the term two holidays, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to go to Rarotonga with the Future Leaders Academy. Arriving at Auckland Airport not knowing anyone on the programme was nerve-racking and a little awkward at the beginning. By the end of the week, I had made so many great friendships, learning about new cultures I wasn’t familiar with, as well as new leadership skills I had inhabited through the programme. We did 1-3 activities in the day; my favourite activities were jumping off the wharf and going to the beach, the needle hike, our cultural performances, the markets, and making umu. I made lifelong memories on the Future Leaders Academy trip and highly recommend it!!

Programmes are being offered regularly; click the link below for more information and how to apply.

Cupcake Mania at the Culinary Fare

Last term, a group of Level 1 & 2 students ventured off to the Culinary Fare, Waikato’s leading culinary competition, with cupcakes in hand. The process was relatively simple: The students created and presented six cupcakes on one plate. The flavour of the cupcakes and plate presentation is the student’s choice.

Year 12 student Cieara entered the Celebration Cake section. She needed to bake and serve a 20 – 25 cm wide and no higher than 50cm Celebration Cake suitable for a birthday or special occasion. Judges are looking for flair, taste and originality, so a description must explain the occasion, the ingredients/ flavours and what inspired the design. Congratulations to Cieara, who came away with a silver medal.
