From the Principal
Tena koutou katoa
Nga mihi nui ki a koutou
This week, we celebrated the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. This is a significant feast day for our Mission Sisters, reminding us of our Mission Charism. Joan Chittister shares a contemporary reflection on its meaning:
‘Mary of the Assumption teaches us to keep our eyes on the things of Heaven: to free ourselves from the fetters of anything lesser; to develop a vision outside of ourselves; and to allow ourselves to be lifted up beyond the petty and the transient to the eternal and the absolute.’
Mary’s love of God lifted her far above the goals and gains of those who had never seen the Christ for what he was, because they were blinded with what they were themselves. Mary of the Assumption is a sign of what we can become!
Kia pai te mutunga wiki – have a good weekend.

Farewell Caroline
We farewell our Deputy Principal, Caroline Gill, this week as she pursues her dream of living and working abroad. Caroline will teach and lead an International school in China.
As a former student and staff member (early in her career), Caroline returned to her turangawaewae almost three years ago. She has been influential, innovative and inspiring as a leader and learner. Everybody who becomes a part of Sacred Heart is always a part of Sacred Heart – and no matter how long or short the stay, the contribution to the growth and development of our students is valued and impactful; in her time with us, Caroline has made a significant impact on our culture of learning. Her curriculum insight and commitment to ‘learning first’ knows no bounds.
We will miss her tenacity (you should see her PowerPoints!) and her penchant for Augustine (IYKYK)!
Age Quod Agis Awards
Celebrating our students
On Tuesday, we held our second Age Quod Agis Awards, a celebration where we recognise ākonga over a term who have demonstrated persistent attitude and effort in their learning. From Years 9 – 13, we celebrated their achievements in front of the whole school and their whānau.

Chanel Shield
Success in Rotorua!
Last weekend, our talented students travelled to John Paul College in Rotorua to compete in the annual Chanel Shield Competition. Friday started with a beautiful pōwhiri and mass; then, it went straight into competitions.
Day 1 started exceptionally well, with Raivenne taking out second for her bible reading, and our debating team won their first debate, guaranteeing their spot in the finals. Dinner is always a nice way for the students to make new friends and connections; the room was buzzing with conversations. Billeting is a tradition for this competition, and our hosts, John Paul College, were incredibly generous with their hospitality. Saturday did not disappoint, with Avisha winning the Senior Poetry Cup. For the second year in a row, our drama team of 6 girls won first place with their piece created from an interpretation of a Bible scripture, and Siona took charge and won the Bible Quiz for the third time. Finishing the day with the prizegiving, we were so pleased to see that we went from 5th place on Friday to take it out 2nd place overall. I want to thank the teachers who organised our team and John Paul College for their generosity.
We look forward to Chanel Shield 2025, which St John’s College will host.
