From the Principal

As I step into the role of Acting Principal this term, I find myself deeply privileged to be part of such a vibrant school community. Recently, I’ve had opportunities to be involved in several school-wide events that reflect the positive, supportive culture in our school whaanau.

Last weekend’s Mission Cup Te Toa Shield Tournament showcased the very best of our students’ character and commitment. Last Friday, I attended the welcome dinner, and it was heartening to see our girls extend warm hospitality to our visiting sister schools with a level of maturity and sincerity that genuinely reflects the essence of manaakitanga. Their interactions and genuine enthusiasm left a lasting impression on all who attended. I commend each student involved for their exemplary representation of our school values over the weekend.

Walking around the school and interacting informally with students and staff daily, I’m struck by the friendly positivity I encounter. At the same time, we’re not a perfect school (there’s no such thing), but the unwavering support and solidarity within our Sacred Heart whaanau foster an environment where both academic excellence and pastoral care thrive.

As we approach the midpoint of the academic year, it’s a fitting time to pause and express gratitude for our community’s unique blessings—a community guided by the principles of Catholic care and compassion.

I extend my heartfelt appreciation to each of you for entrusting us with your daughter’s education. Together, let us continue to nurture and celebrate the remarkable journey of learning and growth that defines the Sacred Heart experience.

Te Toa Shield Report

  • Te Toa Shield Report

This year, the 1st XI hockey team’s goal was to clinch the Te Toa Shield. We played Sacred Heart Napier, Sacred Heart Lower Hutt and Sacred Heart New Plymouth. We started strong, winning our first two games 3-0 and 2-0. We also were successful in our shootouts, winning both these. These were an excellent addition to the tournament to help prepare us for the winter tournament later in the year. New Plymouth were, in the end, victorious with a scoreline of 1-0 against us in a tight and competitive game. While this was not the result we were hoping for, the tournament was a great opportunity for us to come closer as a team and also a chance to meet fellow Sacred Heart students from other schools.

Mission Cup Report

We began our tournament with a loss in the first game against Sacred Heart New Plymouth; however, we worked hard until the last second. Reflecting on this game, we realised the main things we needed to focus on heading into the remaining four games. For the rest of the tournament, we improved as a team, which resulted in us winning the rest of our games and finishing third overall. A special mention goes to Jenni Oliver (Yr 13), who received the MVP award for netball across all six schools; she was constantly hunting for the ball and showed great sportsmanship on and off the court; this was well deserved. Overall, this tournament proved our girls’ outstanding hustle and commitment, which brought us closer as a team. We could not be more proud.

Mission Week

We celebrated Mission Week in the lead-up to Sacred Heart Day next week. It was a meaningful opportunity for us to delve into our mission charism, emphasising key messages that define our identity and guide us in living out our mission. Anne Kaninteang, our dedicated Mission Leader, and her committee worked tirelessly to organise a series of enjoyable and interactive lunchtime events. Our leaders also facilitated donations for Women’s Refuge Waikato and St Vincent De Paul. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all those who participated and donated, contributing to the spirit of compassion and solidarity within our community.

Dance Camp 2024

Our Senior dance students headed to Auckland for their 3-day immersive Dance Camp this week! They have worked with some of the country’s leading choreographers and dancers: Tupua Tigafua, Danielle Tollemache, and Katie Burton (Unitec Dance, Discipline Leader). This trip has allowed our students to see the value and viability of dance, not just as a form of creative expression but as a potential career pathway.

This trip would not have happened without the wonderful support from our friends at First Credit Union.

This week, our wonderful Student Librarian, Jessica, ran a fast-paced scavenger hunt for Book Club. Two teams, Blues Clues and Ninja Turtles raced around the Fiction room, following clues and solving riddles about their favourite books. It was a tight race, but the Ninja Turtles won!

Join us for our next Book Club in two weeks – staff and students are all welcome!
