From the Principal
He mihi teenei ki te whaanau whaanui
Next week is Social Justice Week – Te Wiki o Whakaritenga Tika aa-Paapori, an opportunity to be inspired as active participants in promoting peace in our hearts, peace in our homes and peace in our world. Imagine a world of peace ... it starts in the Heart! Pohewatia te rangimaarie moo te katoa – imagine peace for all. Here are some of the building blocks that students have explored over the last 3 years of social justice week:
- Ka tiimata tonu te rangimaarie i roto i a koe – peace begins with you!
- Koowhiria te murunga hara, kia moohio ki te rangimaarie – choose forgiveness, know peace.
- Puritia te rangimaarie – let’s build peace together!
There is something for all of us to learn here and from the Gospel – “Blessed are the Peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God” (Matthew 5:9)

Winter Tournament Week
Winter Tournament week delivered stellar performances, with breakthrough results that signal an exciting new chapter for the school’s sporting programmes. From penalty shootout victories to significant ranking improvements, our teams have proven that dedication and teamwork can create extraordinary outcomes.
Football
Our 1st XI girls delivered outstanding results, facing tough competition throughout the tournament. In true Sacred Heart style, they maintained their composure and played with integrity. In their final showdown, they defeated St Kentigern’s on penalties (3-2) to finish 9th in New Zealand – an exceptional result for this young team, considering they lost seven Year 13 players last year. Football continues to flourish at SHGC!
What a perfect way for Year 13 students, Olivia Bult (Captain) and Zoe Soper (Vice Captain) to conclude their SHGC football journey. As a goalkeeper and the rock of our 1st XI for four years, Zoe will be greatly missed, alongside captain Olivia, who has been a key player in the 1st XI for the past three years.
Hockey
The 1st XI girls gave 110% in every game, demonstrating teamwork, determination, and friendship both on and off the turf, and came away in 20th place overall. There were some especially close and nail-biting games against Epsom Girls and Long Bay College. A huge thank you to Year 12, Josephine Mumby, for her hard work and support and for mentoring the girls. Special thanks to outgoing Year 13 students Abby Harvey (four years) and Gemma Landers (three years) for their dedicated service to the 1st XI Hockey team.
Netball
Our Senior Premier Netball team had an outstanding campaign at UNISS in Auckland, providing the perfect farewell for departing Year 13 students Bridie Page and Alyah Matara. The team claimed 11th place overall in B Grade, defeating Te Awamutu College 32-16 in their final match. This represents an incredible improvement from 26th place just two seasons ago – a testament to the programme’s continued growth.
Equestrian
Our dedicated Equestrian team of Mackenzy Clarkson, Lily Frederickson, Lila Devoy, Amelia Johnson, Issie Kavanagh, Nadia Lennon, Onour Clarkson, and Hollie Fulton – travelled to Taupō for the North Island Secondary Schools Equestrian Championships.
Huge congratulations to SHGC Team Black (Mackenzy, Lily, Lila, Amelia, Issie, and Nadia), who achieved a commendable 12th place out of 79 schools. More detailed results will be published in the School Magazine.
Our heartfelt thanks extend to the parent coaches who generously share their expertise and passion, transforming our students into confident competitors. To the team managers who coordinate logistics, organise equipment, and ensure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes, and to every parent volunteer who steps up when needed – you are the backbone of our sporting success here at Sacred Heart.
Waikato Regional Science Fair
Three students recently achieved outstanding results at the Waikato Regional Science Fair, which expanded this year to include participants from the Bay of Plenty region. The enlarged competition attracted 450 students across Year levels 7-13, creating a highly competitive environment.
Eliza Songhak earned third place in the Senior Wall Charts category, demonstrating exceptional presentation and research into the Secret World of Funghi.
Ava Dabell claimed third place in Photography, showcasing her ability to capture scientific concepts through compelling imagery.
Alyson Lin achieved an impressive second place in Senior Observational Drawings, highlighting her keen scientific observation skills and artistic talent.
Library Happenings
Our library is a vibrant community space where students connect over puzzles, colouring, games, and, of course, reading. Our Lead Librarian, Leonie, takes pride in creating this welcoming environment for our students.
Current highlights include the “STICK TOGETHER” poster art project, where students receive stickers with each book loan to help complete a collaborative artwork. And with the exam season upon the students, the library also features a creative Taylor Swift-inspired display that connects study techniques to her hit songs – proving that learning can be both effective and fun.
The Garden Party
We’re hosting a special event to celebrate our rich history and showcase our exciting new facilities.
Join us for afternoon tea, tales with Kerre Woodham and a tour of familiar and new spaces. We look forward to bringing alumnae and our school community together on this special occasion.
Help us unite our Sacred Heart community – past and present. Please share this event with your grandmothers, aunts, siblings, cousins and friends who may have walked our corridors. We’d love to welcome them back for an unforgettable afternoon of reconnection.
