Living Our Motto Through Faith and Focus

Age Quod Agis – Pay Attention – Me Aro

Earlier this week, we gathered as a community for the term’s Age Quod Agis Celebration. Age Quod Agis is our school motto – it has been emblazoned on our crest for over 140 years and has lasted the test of time.

We might think it’s a simple phrase, but it carries deep meaning and connects us to centuries of tradition. In the Middle Ages, for example, monks who spent their lives carefully copying sacred texts by hand, would begin their work by praying Age Quod Agis. It was a reminder to approach each task, no matter how small, with absolute laser focus. Why? Because any error would mean a restart and a waste of limited resources: the light of day, candle wax to light the darkness, ink for the pen, paper, time, effort etc. Age Quod Agis – Pay Attention – became not only a prayer but also an instruction.

That image of quiet dedication speaks powerfully to us today. Our students live in a world full of noise and distraction. Their attention is constantly pulled in many directions: devices, notifications, peer pressure, social competition and comparison, to name a few. Yet our motto calls us to something higher: to be present, purposeful – wholehearted – in whatever we do: that could be in class, on the sports field, at home, on the bus!

When we pay attention, we show respect for our learning, for those also part of the learning and for the gifts and opportunities we have been given. Age Quod Agis is a simple yet transformative habit that strengthens both achievement and wellbeing: students can excel when they pay attention to what matters most!

Age Quod Agis acknowledges students who consistently demonstrate this spirit of attention; those who show persistent focus, genuine effort and respect for our shared spaces and resources; indeed, they remind us that success often emerges, quietly, from consistent effort, self-discipline and self-regulation. And from a Catholic perspective, paying attention is also about presence – noticing with gratitude God’s presence in our lives.

So, as we move through this term, I invite all of us – students, staff and whānau – to live out our motto: Age Quod Agis – Pay Attention – Me Aro. And whatever you are doing, do it wholeheartedly and in the service of others – just like the monks in their Scriptorium!

Kia pai te mutunga wiki – have a good weekend.

International News

A Journey to Hikarigaoka

  • International News

Each year, our International Director travels overseas to connect with agents and families. This year, Collette Tuioti’s journey took her to Japan, where, after three hours on the Shinkansen speed train, she arrived at Hikarigaoka Girls’ High School, an all-girls Catholic school. Principal Sr Misako Kobayashi and Vice Principal Mr Naoki Nakane (pictured) warmly welcomed her.

During her visit, Mrs Tuioti was graciously hosted by Yukari Kato, Head Teacher of International Education, and English Teacher Moeka, who showed her around the school. She was delighted to learn more about the school of our current international student at Sacred Heart, Momoka Kanda.

The highlight of the trip was interviewing prospective students. Kokona and Saki will start their one-year-long study experience beginning in 2026. Their mothers asked thoughtful questions about food, transportation, and activities, while both girls expressed excitement about coming to New Zealand.
