From the Principal

Over the last few weeks, our Year 13 students have been preparing themselves for the wrench of leaving Sacred Heart. This week, they have a final attempt to demonstrate their learning as they focus on the exam season – NCEA is in full swing. No matter the outcome of these exams, they measure only one aspect of those students who have graced our classrooms and corridors with their gifts, talents and dedication to their learning. No doubt they will reap the rewards of their perseverance and tenacity, not only with quality exam results but also with effective learning habits that will support their future, beyond the school gates.

Our Thanksgiving Mass and Poroporoaki recognises the gifts we all bring to our community, our authentic self, and our community will never be the same again. Nevertheless, as our Pounamu ritual reminds us, ‘once a part of Sacred Heart, always a part of Sacred Heart’. Their wairua is always a presence – Mauri Ora!

Our message to all who leave us at the end of this year is: ‘be and do’ as Euphrasie Barbier ‘was and did’ – build community, seek out times in your day to be contemplative and make the world a better place. As these waahine toa make their own way in the world, may they be awake to their Whakapono, Tuumanako me Tika – Faith, Hope and Justice – and be that part of the Sacred Heart that shapes the world – me aro ki te hā o Hineahuone!

Speaking of those who leave us, the Church also ensures that the faithful departed are never forgotten. November is the month of the year that the Church dedicates to remembering those we know and love and those unknown to us, for whom we also pray: ‘The dead are not distant or absent. They are alongside us ... they slip out of visible form into invisible presence. But because we cannot see them does not mean that they are not there. The dead cannot reverse the journey ... they continue to be near us. When we enter the eternal world and come to see our lives on earth in full view, we may be surprised at the immense assistance and support with which our departed loved ones have accompanied every moment of our lives ... secret angels guiding and sheltering the unfolding of our destiny’ – from ‘Divine Beauty’, John O’Donohue, a wonderful companion for this contemplative time of year – Holy Souls month.

For all those we have loved and lost from this world into the next, may they be at peace in the arms of Christ – kia noho maarie ia ki te poho o te Karaiti.

Kia pai te wiki – have a great week.

Seniors Final Week

Farewell and Best Wishes to Our Year 13 Students

  • Seniors Final Week

What an unforgettable week it was for our Year 13 students! As they approached the end of their time at Sacred Heart, our senior girls made the most of every precious moment together – celebrating their journey, their friendships, and all they have accomplished.

The week concluded in a beautiful Thanksgiving Mass, where Father Darren delivered a powerful homily: "Make the Gospel your algorithm." His words reminded our young women to let their faith guide their choices and actions as they step forward into the next chapter of their lives.

As we said our goodbyes, there were plenty of tears shed, but even more pride in all that our Year 13s have achieved during their time with us. They have grown into confident, compassionate young women who embody our school values every day.

Now it’s time for them to focus on the task at hand: their final NCEA examinations. We encourage them to Pay Attention – Age Quod Agis – and give these last few weeks their very best effort. We know they are more than ready, and we’re sending all our support and best wishes as they tackle their exams.

We look forward to celebrating with our Year 13s once again at our whole-school Prizegiving on Friday, December 5th at 9am - a special occasion to honour their achievements and contributions to our Sacred Heart community.

Kia kaha, Year 13. You’ve got this!

YES Waikato Winners!

Year 13 Business Team Heads to Nationals

  • Lucy, Georgia, Milla & Tamsin

Four Year 13 students have turned a simple school footwear frustration into regional business success, taking out top honours at the Young Enterprise Scheme Regional Finals.

Their company, Strap'n'Stroll, created an ingenious solution to a problem familiar to many students: how to wear comfortable Birkenstocks at school when only closed-back shoes are allowed. The answer? A detachable, adjustable back strap that transforms slip-ons into school-approved footwear.

The winning team includes CEO Lucy Cowie, CFO Georgia Kendrick, Production Manager Milla Rusbridge, and Communications & Marketing Manager Tamsin Autridge, who together identified a genuine market gap and delivered an innovative product to fill it.

Their efforts earned them not one, but two prestigious awards: Waikato Business of the Year and the Excellence in Innovation Award.

The success story doesn’t end there. Georgia and Tamsin will represent the school at the National Awards in Wellington this December, competing against the country’s best young entrepreneurs.

It’s a perfect example of creative problem-solving in action – turning an everyday challenge into a viable business solution.

Congratulations to the Strap'n'Stroll team on this outstanding achievement!

SHGC Eagles Soar Again!

  • Cheerleading Success

On Saturday 26th October, our incredible SHGC Cheer Eagles took to the floor at the CNZ Nationals in Rotorua – and absolutely smashed it!

Against fierce competition, our squad of 14 brought home an incredible 3rd Place finish!

This result means the Eagles have placed in the Top 3 at every school-based competition in 2025 – including being Champions at the Schools Spectacular back in September!

We are so proud of these talented athletes, their teamwork, dedication, and energy!

We can’t wait to see how they continue to fly high in 2026!

A huge thank you to Lexi, and Tracey from Cheer Dynamix, for their ongoing support and guidance with our team.

Australia Bound

Elite Achievement: 15 Chosen from 75 Hopefuls

Huge congratulations to Maddie Ace, Caitlin Sisterton and Blake McFarlane, who have been selected to represent New Zealand at the AASCF Australian International Championships in Melbourne from 17th to 24th November. These 3 students are part of the Cheer Dynamix ‘Shimmer’ Team, and are undefeated across New Zealand.

From an initial pool of 75 candidates, only 15 athletes made the cut for this international team – an outstanding achievement that showcases their exceptional talent and dedication.

Best of luck to them, as they compete on the international stage.
