From the Principal
In preparation for the season of Lent that starts next week, we pray for the humility to walk back into the open arms of our God. Traditionally, Lent is a time of fasting, praying and giving. It still is, and there is also a contemporary context for this season of personal reflection and preparation for the Great Feast of the Resurrection... we Fast from, so that we can Feast on:
Fast from anxiety; Feast on Faith.
Fast from pessimism; Feast on Hope.
Fast from judging others; Feast on Justice.
Fast from discontent; Feast on gratitude.
Fast from anger; Feast on patience.
Fast from negatives; Feast on encouragement.
Fast from bitterness; Feast on forgiveness.
Fast from self-concern; Feast on compassion.
Fast from suspicion; Feast on truth.
Fast from gossip; Feast on purposeful silence.
Fast from problems that overwhelm; Feast on prayer that sustains.

Athletics Day
This annual event showcased our students’ energy, enthusiasm, and sportsmanship. Participation was among the best we’ve seen in both competitive and non-competitive events. The six house groups competed spiritedly, including chants, tug-of-war, and relays. To finish off the afternoon, Aubert charged ahead to claim victory.
Congratulations to our Champions!

International News
Camp Discovery
Last weekend, 25 international students attended Camp Discovery at the Pirongia Forest Park Lodge. The two-night excursion was packed with many exciting activities and valuable bonding experiences.
The adventure began with fish and chips on the beach, followed by a scenic Raglan Harbour Cruise. Various thrilling outdoor challenges followed, including flying fox, archery, abseiling, caving, night bushwalking, and stargazing. Students enjoyed great Kiwi food between activities while forming new friendships and gaining confidence in trying new experiences.
This camp was an excellent opportunity for our new international students to immerse themselves in New Zealand’s culture. We’re pleased to report that our international students are settling into their classes and the school environment, and we look forward to a fun and productive remainder of the term.

Pasifika Movie Fundraiser
Join us for a special screening of TINĀ at the Lido Cinema on Thursday, 13th March!
TINĀ tells the powerful story of Samoan teacher Mareta Percival, who, while grieving the loss of her daughter in the Christchurch earthquakes, takes on a teaching position at an elite private school.
All proceeds will support SHGC Pasifika initiatives, helping our students thrive through cultural performances, events, and resources.
Come enjoy this meaningful film while contributing to our Pasifika community at school! Bring your friends and family to support this great cause!

Sports Uniform Update
Like our NEW PE uniform, we are updating our sports uniforms across various codes. Creating a unified, on-brand look across all sports ensures our students present a cohesive identity.
We’re implementing changes gradually to minimize the financial impact on families. Not all sports codes will receive new uniforms this year; some will continue using existing uniforms.
The Sports Development Team will communicate specific information about which codes will receive new uniforms in the next 2 weeks. Please wait for this advice before purchasing second-hand sports uniforms online, e.g., Marketplace, as we are phasing the old PE tops out.
Student Success
We love to hear about our students succeeding in their chosen fields outside the school gates. Congratulations to Year 10 student Issie Kavanagh, for her success at the following events on her pony; Fair Deal (Poppy).
- Waikato Mounted Games – 1st overall for Novice pairs
- Te Aroha Twilight Show Jumping Series – 1st overall for the series.
Toilet Paper Fashion Challenge
Last week, our Year 10 Fashion and Design students tackled a creative challenge using just two rolls of toilet paper and sellotape. Teams had 20 minutes to design fashion pieces for their chosen models.
This quick activity promoted teamwork while providing plenty of fun for everyone involved.

KINDO
Thank you to our families for your patience during our transition to KINDO. We’ve been delighted with the positive response so far. We encourage you to take advantage of the Wallet feature, which allows you to make smaller, more manageable payments over time rather than large lump sums.
Attendance Reminder
If your daughter will be absent from school during the day for any reason, please phone the school 856 7874, or email the Student Coordinator: absences@shgcham.school.nz giving a reason for her absence. If a student will be absent from school for an extended period, whānau must inform Miss Gunn. Please email Ms Ritchie at pa@shgcham.school.nz explaining why she is absent – e.g., a holiday during term time.
