We celebrated our of Mass Dedication: The Year of Hope – Tuumanako – and the Contemplative Heart. When we gather to celebrate the Sacrament of the Eucharist on the Feast of the Annunciation, we do this because the Mission Sisters across the world celebrate and contemplate on this feast day: the Annunciation reveals a sign of Hope, an example of contemplation, a woman of faithful devotion and service and an inspiration for Mission and Justice: Mary the Mother of God. The better we know and understand Mary, the better we know and understand Jesus the Christ.

“On this day a young woman stopped to see with open eyes and heart.
She heard the voice;
The promise of God’s glory yet to be,
As time stood still for her to make a choice;
Gabriel knelt, and not a feather stirred,
The Word was waiting on her word.”
(adapted from Malcolm Guite)

In our Year of Hope, Contemplation and Whanaungatanga, we also give the Gospel story of the Annunciation our attention; we contemplate on the mysterious moment of awareness, acceptance and transformation – Age Quod Agis – Pay Attention!

As we continue to focus on the Annunciation, during Lent, may we be the Angelic Messengers of Good News: God is Hope; God is Love; God is Justice: the greatest temptation is not to give up on our fast from sugar but to give up on our trust in
Hope!

Kia tau te Rangimaarie i runga i a koutou katoa – let peace settle upon us all!

German Exchange

During the summer holidays, four other Sacred Heart students and I – Jessica Tunnell, Jessica Walker, Scarlet Molenaar-Ware, and Daisy Daborn – had an amazing opportunity to go on exchange to Germany. We spent seven weeks in different German cities with our exchange partners, who are now visiting Sacred Heart until the end of the term.

We went to school, practised our German, travelled, and spent our Christmas holidays on the other side of the globe. I had the privilege of visiting five different countries in the weeks I was there, that’s more countries visited in seven weeks than I had been to in my entire life! I saw iconic world-famous landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and the Cologne Cathedral, and I was in absolute awe of how much history places like that had.

My peers and I all had this incredible experience because we took German until Year 12. I would highly recommend taking a language in your Senior years at Sacred Heart, not only because it can lead to amazing experiences like this but also because languages can teach you so much about the world and the people in it.

Kilikiti

  • Kilikiti

Our Senior and Junior Kilikiti teams had a friendly game of Samoan cricket with Hamilton Girls’ High School a few weeks ago. Kilikiti is played with a large three-sided bat and has evolved from British cricket to have a distinctly Pasifika flair. Participants wear traditional lavalava, and singing and cheering are integral to the game. Everyone had a great time on the day, and true camaraderie was created between the two schools over a shared love of the game of Kilikiti and the celebration of Pasifika culture.

Last week, our Equestrian Team competed at the Pegasus Cup held at the world-class Takapoto Estate. Over two intense days of competition, our four riders – Issie Kavanagh, Amelia Johnson, Olivia Watson, and Mackenzy Clarkson showcased remarkable skill and determination across multiple challenging classes.

Olivia competed in the 90cm, coming in 10th.

Equitation Class

Issie received a callback with a final placing of 4th, and Mackenzy received a callback, finishing 7th.

Accumulator

This event is based on points per jump, plus a bonus point if you jump and clear an extra big jump called the Joker. Well done to Issie, who cleared the Joker, coming in 6th place overall.

Our girls should be proud of themselves, ending up 28th out of 51 teams.

Level 1 PE Camp

Last week, 67 students embarked on an unforgettable adventure to Raglan for their PE camp, centred around kotahitanga -unity and teamwork.

On day one, students were placed into teams and took on a range of challenges, including Beach Survivor, sandcastle competitions, and a trivia night. Day two kicked off with an intense battle rope run around the marine harbour before heading back to camp to pack down and prepare for some competitive games of Kī-o-Rahi.

Throughout the camp, students put their communication, cooperation, and problem-solving skills to the test. While the weather didn’t quite come to the party, it strengthened our resilience, and we pushed through together – demonstrating the true spirit of kotahitanga.

Earring Policy Reminder

We have noticed an increase in students wearing non-regulation earrings, including multiple piercings that do not align with our school guidelines. Our current policy permits only one pair of plain gold or silver studs or small sleepers worn in the lower ear lobe. Face piercings are not allowed.

Any jewellery that does not meet these guidelines will be confiscated and can be collected from the Student Centre at the end of each school term.

We kindly request parents’ support in ensuring students adhere to our uniform and accessory regulations.
