E te whānau whānui o Sacred Heart,

Term 2 ended with full hearts after celebrating Sacred Heart Day. In these past 9 weeks, we have seen our tauira stretch beyond what they thought possible; and we have recognised that through an Age Quod Agis Celebration. We have connected with our Mission Colleges across the motu for the annual Mission Cup and Te Toa Shield sports events. We have shown aroha for our neighbours through our major food drive for Vinnies during Spirit Week. We have seen quiet leadership emerging through enterprise, entrepreneurship and creativity.

We have enriched our students’ learning through camps, courses and experiences outside the classroom to whet their appetite for further education and opportunities beyond the school gates.

And, again and again, we are continually reminded that Catholic Education is not only about content, it’s about connection, character and care. In other words, it’s about Communion, Contemplation and Mission – our Charism and our purpose – me aro ki te haa o Hineahuone – take heed, the strength and dignity of women! As we approach the break, I invite you to continue to embrace the wisdom of Matariki: a time for remembrance, celebration of the present and planning for the future. May the days ahead offer you time to rest, to reconnect with what gives you joy, and to ready yourselves for all that Term 3 will hold.

And if you’re a senior student (and actually reading this), it’s the final lap of the marathon for NCEA internal assessment, before the sprint to the finish line for external exams!. Ensure you get approval for independent study leave by managing your learning and meeting the requirements of the ASLAP. Before you know it, the cherry blossom will be in full bloom, that’s a sign for you to be the best version of your learner-self: kia puaawai, kia manawanui, kia maaia!

Ngaa mihi, e te whaanau, for all that you contribute to our community; whether you are tauira, kaimahi, parent, alumni or friend, we are all a part of our Sacred Heart story, and we’re still writing it for the mokopuna of tomorrow.

Mānawatia a Matariki ... may this time of renewal bless you and those you love.

Ngaa manaakitanga,
Catherine Gunn - Tumuaki

Spirit Week

Spirit Week & Sacred Heart Day Celebration

  • Spirit Week

Last week, our school celebrated Spirit Week and the Feast Day of the Sacred Heart, reminding us of Jesus’s love and honouring our founding RNDM Sisters of our Lady of the Mission. We were blessed to have our Mission Sisters celebrate morning Mass with us. We then enjoyed house activities and our much-anticipated house dance-off. Congratulations, Siena, for taking out the house dance-off!

Parcels of Hope

  • Spirit Week

Thank you to our community for the overwhelming donations for our Parcels of Hope initiative. This mission drive elevated our Year of Hope at school and in the Catholic Church. Our dedicated Mission Committee students requested non-perishable and essential items for St Vincent de Paul, cleverly turning it into a house competition. Congratulations to Lisieux for their huge win!

As items were counted, boxed, and delivered, everyone felt the significance of the moment. These weren’t just donations – they were parcels of hope, carrying the message that someone cares. In the spirit of Euphrasie Barbier, our students discovered that the greatest spirit reaches beyond ourselves to lift others up.

Duke of Edinburgh – Bronze Tramp

From Steep Climbs to Summit Views

On Friday, 13th June, at 7am, the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh girls set off on their qualifying tramp to Mt Pirongia. This unforgettable adventure was filled with challenges, teamwork, and stunning scenery.

One of the most intense parts of the journey was climbing the steep rocks while holding onto chains to climb safely. It was a true test of our strength and nerves, especially with our full packs.

We experienced a lot of rain, and it was very cold. Despite the weather conditions, we supported each other as a team. By the end of the day, we were all counting down until we arrived at Pahautea Hut. We were all tired but proud of what we had achieved. As soon as we arrived, we put on many warm layers of clothes and cooked our well-deserved dinner. After an early start and a long day, sleep never felt so well-earned. We couldn’t wait to collapse into bed.

On Saturday morning, we were up bright and early. Once we had breakfast and packed everything up, we left the hut all prepared for another big day. The views from the lookout of Mt Pirongia were breathtaking. The weather was beautiful, and there was more scenery to see rather than fog. After a day of hiking, we returned to the bottom of the mountain, and we all looked forward to getting home to a hot shower.

Reflecting on this tramp, we can see how much fitness and team building are required for something like this. It pushed us out of our comfort zones, and we learnt a lot about ourselves and each other. A huge thanks to Mrs Cooper; this trip wouldn’t have been possible without her. Also, thank Mrs Maxwell, Mrs Eshuis and Mrs Broadbent, who supported and motivated us.

Overall, it was an amazing experience that we will never forget!
