On 6 July SHGC New Plymouth students travelled to Hamilton to play our Senior Basketball and 1st XV Rugby teams. Both New Plymouth teams were highly rated and lived up to expectations.

The rugby match was a cracker with both teams trading tries in the first half. Early in the second half we had a 27-10 lead. But New Plymouth stormed back into the match with two tries and a conversion, ensuring a thrilling final 10 minutes. The final result was a 27-22 victory against a quality opposition.

Our basketball team had just one senior student, so it was always going to be an uphill battle. The final score was 89-40 to New Plymouth. All credit to our young side for staying strong and winning the last quarter; basketball at our school has a bright future.

A wonderful sports exchange (which we hope will become an annual event) was capped off with food and speeches. We would like to acknowledge Kate and Gerald Lynch, parents of a New Plymouth rugby player, who donated a rugby trophy to mark the occasion.
