If you want to keep fit, stay active, challenge yourself or simply be with like-minded people, come and give running a go. Our school Cross Country event is held in Term 2 (May) – so get involved!
Top performing SHGC cross country runners are selected to participate at the local Central Zones Event and depending on placings may attend Waikato Bay of Plenty Championships.
A lot of students who participate in Cross Country/Road running (May – September) are affiliated with a local Club. All of these clubs provide coaching and help to their members. The internet will provide you with contact details and information regarding these clubs.
SHGC Cross Country 2020
A group of 44 cross country runners ascended to the Hamilton Gardens to test their metal against a challenging 3.56 Km course. Thankfully, the sun played its part after the ground saturating weather the previous day. House points were up for grabs with 1st runners awarded 15 pts, 2nd 10 pts and 3rd 5 pts.
The Year 9 runners were first to test themselves where Lily Marlow took the honors in a time of 16m30s followed by Petra Hayes and Jenni Oliver shortly after.
Next, the large field of 25 Junior runners set off. The top 3 runners jostled over the lead numerous times around the course with Rejoice Nhemachena eventually finishing in the fastest time for the day of 14m15s. Second place went to Lola Hennessy and third to Kiana Pohe-Bright.
The Senior runners had the last run for the day where places stayed steady throughout the race. It was like a Clash of the Codes with Football, Lacrosse and Rowing representing the top 3 positions. Coming in first by a split second was Kate McConnell at 17m38s followed by Kyrstie Solomon and Brooke Pitchford.
Over the day Avila earned 51 pts, Lisieux 33 pts, Barbier 27 pts, Aubert 26 pts MacKillop 4 pts and Siena 3 pts.
A great day was had by all. Thanks to the teachers and Year 13 helpers who helped make the day a great success.
