And here we are again – close to the end of another term and another school year – but not just yet – it’s the middle of November which means it’s the month of the year that the Church dedicates to remembering the ‘Faithful Departed’ – those we know and love and those unknown to us, for whom we also pray. The spirituality of John O’Donohue is a wonderful companion for this contemplative time:

‘The dead are not distant or absent. They are alongside us...they slip out of visible form into invisible presence. But because we cannot see them does not mean that they are not there. The dead cannot reverse the journey ... they continue to be near us. When we enter the eternal world and come to see our lives on earth in full view, we may be surprised at the immense assistance and support with which our departed loved ones have accompanied every moment of our lives...secret angels guiding and sheltering the unfolding of our destiny’ – from ‘Divine Beauty’.

For all those we have loved and lost from this world to the next, may they be at peace in the arms of Christ – kia noho mārie ia ki te poho o te Karaiti.

Students Lead the Way in the Mission Sustainable Challenge

This year, nine Sacred Heart students joined others from across the Waikato at Waikato University for the Mission Sustainable Challenge, an initiative encouraging students to tackle pressing environmental issues. They collaborated to develop solutions for challenges such as waste reduction and water conservation.

For example, Taana Waterhouse and Heidi Maarhuis created a sustainable irrigation system to promote plant growth while monitoring water use, and Anna Turingan proposed using sheep’s wool with GPS tracking to provide thermal warmth for extreme hiking conditions. These are just a few examples of how our students applied technology and innovation to sustainability.

A key part of the challenge was the mentorship from industry professionals, who guided students in refining their ideas and ensuring they were scalable and impactful. Working in teams with students from other schools, they learned how to solve problems and present their ideas effectively.

Congratulations to all participants, especially the winners who each received $40 in Prezzy Cards. Our students – Heidi Maarhuis, Anna Turingan, Taana Waterhouse, Sachi McKoy, Hannah Middleton, Kate Mourits, Madison Nickalls, Shelby-Ann McQuaide, and Imogen Turner – have shown they are ready to lead in environmental sustainability.

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari kē he toa takitini – My success is not mine alone, but is the strength of many.

Pasifika performance at the Kirikiriroa Festival

On Friday, 18th October, a talented group of Pasifika students performed at the first-ever Kirikiriroa Festival in Hamilton. Their performance showcased a beautiful blend of Samoan, Tongan, and Cook Island cultures. The girls looked stunning in their traditional attire, representing our school with pride and grace. It was an incredible event, and we were proud to see their efforts and dedication.

Last week we were delighted to welcome 50 students and staff from Ashiya International School in Osaka, Japan. They were in New Zealand for just a week, and we were the only school they visited.  Our guests enjoyed a day filled with cultural activities and a taste of Kiwi hospitality, complete with a classic morning tea featuring sausage rolls and hokey pokey ice cream!

It is a busy time of year as we prepare for next year’s students. It is also the season for goodbyes; we had a lovely farewell dinner last week and, on Saturday, wished safe travels to Rio and Aoi, who are heading back to Japan via Sydney.

Year 11 Practical Art and PhotoDesign students have spent the last ten weeks creating an artist’s book reflecting a theme of their choice. They could use any of the art techniques they had become familiar with during the year. The cohort has really responded to this brief with creativity and enthusiasm. Many students chose to focus on aspects of their identity and drew inspiration from personally significant places, people, and pastimes.
