After an unusually long first term, next week is Holy Week – the final ‘walk’ towards the Cross in Hope of the Resurrection: when Jesus came back to life and told a different story – a story about life and love:

“I haere mai ahau kia whiwhi ai rātou ki te ora, inā, tōna nui noa atu – I have come so they may have life and have it in abundance” (John 10:10)

New life starts in the dark, whether it is a seed in the ground, a child in the womb or Jesus in the tomb – it all starts in the dark, may we recognise our dark days as the start of something to be transformed, then we will indeed have life and have it abundantly!

RNDM Retreat 2025

Our recent Retreat with the RNDM sisters was a great opportunity for reflection and growth. We came together as school leaders to explore the theme of Hope and deepen our commitment to servant leadership. Throughout the Retreat, we were guided through meaningful discussions and activities, each one pointing to our shared mission of fostering a welcoming, inclusive community centered around faith and service.

The Retreat focused on these key themes: embracing our cultural context and diversity, embracing the spirit of mission through Euphrasie Barbier’s legacy, and working together to be pilgrims of hope for our schools and community.

As student leaders, this was a valuable time to gain an understanding of who we are as servant leaders and the importance of knowing who we are as a Mission School. Forming connections to our mission and building friendships with our fellow Mission School leaders, we are filled with zeal for the Divine Missions. In the spirit of Euphrasie, we hope to be servant leaders who serve as women of the Divine Missions.

Maadi Regatta 2025

End of an Era: Georgia & Lily reflect on their rowing achievements

To round off the rowing season for 2025, we competed at the Maadi Regatta last month, New Zealand’s Secondary School Rowing Championships, a pinnacle event for young rowers nationwide. The week tested everyone physically and mentally, with long days at the course, rapidly changing weather, and fierce competition from the best school crews in the country. Every girl in the squad showed perseverance in every race, with close finishes, improvements, and intense races. Across the six days of racing, SHGC secured two A finals and four B finals.

Rowing at SHGC isn’t just a sport; it’s a journey. It’s learning to push through the hard moments, finding strength in teamwork and celebrating small wins along the way. For me and I know many of our girls, rowing becomes a second home, a place of laughter, growth, and friendship. This sport has taught me so much and shaped me to be who I am today. I was recently selected for a 2025 U19 New Zealand trial and Lily Ashton has been selected for a 2025 U18 North Island trial.

This season marked the final one for Lily and me. We met through rowing and over the seasons, formed a bond built on shared early mornings, tough sessions, race day nerves, and many laughs throughout the season. We leave SHGC rowing with more than just medals but also memories that will last a lifetime.

If you’ve ever watched a rowing race or just heard about the sport and considered joining, our Learn to Row Programme is the perfect place to start; keep an eye out for more information about this later in the year. You don’t need any experience, give it a go! Rowing is a fun way to stay fit, make friends, and be part of something special. Signing up to try out this sport has been one of my best decisions!

International News

Our International students wrap up Term 1

As Term 1 draws to a close, we bid farewell to our visiting Term 1 international students who have enriched our school community over the past several weeks. They are now preparing for their journeys home, along with other students travelling for the school holidays. We extend our warmest wishes for safe travels to all.

The final days of the term remained busy with educational opportunities. On Wednesday, students participated in a field trip to Rotorua, where they explored and studied various tourism activities firsthand, gaining valuable insights into this important sector of New Zealand’s economy.

Looking ahead, our international program continues to thrive, with 17 new students set to join us for Term 2 and an impressive number of additional enrolments already confirmed for Term 3. These promising figures reflect our international education offerings’ ongoing strength and appeal.
