From the Principal

From the Principal

Over the last few weeks our Year 13 students have been preparing themselves for the wrench of leaving Sacred Heart Girls’ College. This week, they have a final attempt to demonstrate their learning as they focus on the exam season. No matter the outcome of these exams, they measure only one aspect of those students who have graced our classrooms and corridors with their gifts, talents and dedication to their learning, rising to the challenges presented to them. They will undoubtedly reap the rewards of their perseverance and tenacity, with quality exam results and effective learning habits that will support their future beyond the school gates.

Our Mass and Pounamu ritual recognise the gifts we all bring to our community: ourselves. Our community will never be the same again; however, all our students and staff who leave us at the end of this year also leave with us their wairua – Mauri Ora!

As a Mission College that also develops habits of the heart and hands, our message to leavers is also: ‘be and do’ as Euphrasie Barbier was and did: build community, seek out times in your day to be still and contemplative and make the world a better place for all...me aro ki te hā o Hineahuone!

Thanksgiving Mass

  • Thanksgiving Mass

Last Thursday, we gathered for our final Mass of the year, the Thanksgiving Mass. This event holds deep meaning for our Year 13 students as well as other students and staff who will be leaving us at the end of the year.

This year Miss Gunn led poroporoaki with a pounamu ritual: each leaving student, called by name, leaves their wairua with us through the symbolic action of touching the pounamu. This pounamu, a heart-shaped taonga – was gifted to the Principal by a former member of staff. Blessed with the water from the Waikato awa, it is worn by the Principal when the Korowai is worn at our powhiri and prizegiving. For the last few years, it has been a ritual for staff at the beginning of the year and leaving students at the end of Year 13. This taonga carries the wairua of staff and students who have been a part of Sacred Heart – those living and deceased because we believe that once a part of Sacred Heart, always a part of Sacred Heart. The ancient ritual of touching items of spiritual or religious significance is common across many cultures.

Celebrating Excellence

  • 2024 Altrusa Youth Award Recipient

Every year, Waikato schools have the opportunity to recognise a Year 12 student who demonstrates outstanding qualities within their school and community. The awards honour students for their courtesy, positive attitude and initiative, sportsmanship, contributions to community work in and out of school, and commitment to academic improvement.

This year, we are proud to announce that Oracle-Rose Haenga-Ashby was selected as the recipient of this award for Sacred Heart. In a special ceremony, Deputy Mayor of Hamilton, Angela O'Leary, presented the awards to all honourees, acknowledging their dedication and impact.

Congratulations to Oracle-Rose for this well-deserved recognition and her commitment to excellence in all areas of school life and beyond!

International News

As the season of exams and academic achievements rolls in, our students continue to shine in their pursuits. Recently, one of our dedicated international students, Rio Suzuki, achieved an impressive result on her IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exam, a testament to her hard work and dedication. Meanwhile, Vinda reached a milestone of her own, earning a perfect score of 100% on her Guitar Tablature assignment—an accomplishment that speaks to her passion and skill.

Rio, Vinda, and Fiona were celebrated at our recent Age Quod Agis assembly in recognition of their recent achievements, which is a proud moment for our international school community.

It is also the time of year for departures, and this week we wave goodbye to Mao as she heads home for the summer holidays.

We are receiving lots of enquiries for international enrolments for 2025, so would still like to hear from you if you are considering hosting one of our lovely students. Any questions, please contact our Homestay Coordinator – Lisa Cowen lcowen@shgcham.school.nz
