We visited an engineering firm called Precision Machining that specialises in making machining parts, mainly out of metals such as aluminum, titanium and stainless steel, heard about the different aspects of engineering, followed by a tour of the workshop.
We then went to Wintec where we listened to a few alumni talk about their experience at Wintec while studying to be an engineer. One recurring theme of their speeches was their passion for engineering and that even if you feel you do not have the qualifications or the knowledge, as long as you have determination and work hard, you can make it.
Our last tour for the day was at Pacific Aerospace, the only firm in New Zealand that makes airplanes from scratch. Did you know that once a plane is finished, each piece of it is traceable, back to the same sheet of metal it is cut out from? That’s a lot of paperwork!
