Hot Pools, Wet Socks, and 53km of Memories

25 June 2026

When 53 kilometres of Rotorua bush, lakes, and geothermal wonders await, you lace up your boots and go. Silver and Gold Duke of Ed participants did exactly that – here’s how it unfolded.

  • Hot Pools, Wet Socks, and 53km of Memories

Last week, Silver and Gold Duke of Ed Award participants journeyed to the beautiful lakes and bush around Rotorua. As a group, we tackled 53km over three days, experiencing the beauty of Lake Tarawera, Lake Okareka, Blue Lake, Lake Oketaina, and a natural geothermal pool. While the wind and rain did nip at our toes, we managed to push through nature’s hurdles and complete a successful three-day tramp. The sun made regular appearances, granting us beautiful views and adequate time to dry out some rain-soaked gear.

We had many highlights on our adventurous journey. We spotted wildlife – both welcome, such as pīwakawaka, tūī, and the kāmana (dabchick), and unwelcome, like the wallaby, ferret, and a cheeky little stoat – and learned so much about the history behind our trails, notably the legend of Blue Lake. However, I think we all agreed the natural hot pool on the Tarawera Trail was the standout highlight. I mean, who wouldn’t love soaking in nature’s hot tub while little fish nibble away your dead skin?

Overall, the hike was an immense success and an excellent learning opportunity for being well prepared in the outdoors – from packing a first-aid kit to discovering you can actually eat supplejack. By the end of our journey, there was a bittersweet moment as we realised it was our last hike truly together. Congrats to our Silver girls for finishing your qualifying tramp, and best of luck to our Gold girls for their upcoming one.
