Three SHGC students competed in the New Zealand National Brass Band Competitions in Dunedin in the holidays. Hana Okutomi (International Student) and Sammy Richards performed with the Matamata Brass Band – Sammy on Cornet and Hana on Percussion.
The band was directed by Sammy’s father, Glenn Richards (who also leads our school concert band). The band was placed FIRST in their section and the judge commented on Hana’s percussion skills. Year 9 student Lizzie Barr competed for the first time in solo competitions and performed with acclaim. Her father Malcolm plays in Hamilton City Brass and they were placed a proud 4th in the A Grade. Lizzie and Hana also play with the Hamilton Auxiliary Brass band and will be competing at regionals soon.
