At Sacred Heart Girls’ College, we pride ourselves on offering a fun, safe, educational camp tailored to our international students: Camp Discovery. The students experience a thrilling three-day, two-night taste of the adventurous Kiwi spirit that many New Zealand kids experience right in the heart of the beautiful Waikato.
Camp Discovery offers a refreshing break from the digital world, allowing the girls to disconnect while fully engaging in the wonders of our natural environment. Nestled in the foothills of the Waikato’s mighty Mount Pirongia, students embark on outdoor activities, roast marshmallows over campfires, and marvel at our clear night skies. The days are jam-packed with thrilling activities, including caving, flying fox, archery, and various games, providing entertainment with an endless sense of accomplishment and instilling the Kiwi’s can-do spirit. The end of the day quickly arrives, and everyone is exhausted and ready to do it again the next day!
Students learn essential teamwork skills, support each other in the more challenging activities, appreciate their environment as a team, and learn to share duties and help with practical tasks like meal preparation and cleaning up. Camp Discovery meals are a treat with the typical iconic Kiwi foods included, such as Marmite on toast, Fish & Chips, Garlic Bread and the ever-popular Hokey Pokey Ice Cream.
“ I learned I really love fish & chips” Nagi – Japan
Through active participation, students forge lifelong bonds with their peers, united by shared achievements and personal growth. Camp Discovery is also a platform for staff to build stronger relationships with students outside the classroom. Trust, rapport, and camaraderie naturally occur with students and staff by spending time together in a different setting. Observing students’ behaviour and interactions in this context provides valuable insights into their personalities, interests, and needs, enabling us to offer tailored support and encouragement in their academic journey.
Ultimately, Camp Discovery leaves students with cherished memories of laughter, friendship, and personal growth, reinforcing the confidence and resilience inherent in the Kiwi way of life. This experience leaves a lasting impression on all our international students.
