Knitting For Good

This year, the charity Premmie Knitting Club celebrated its 10th anniversary by encouraging New Zealanders to knit or crochet peggy squares to make blankets. Our librarian, Whaea Leonie, invited our staff and students to join in.

Our goal was 100 squares to create five blankets. Students gathered in the library over many lunchtimes to learn to knit, and staff kept a table of needles and yarn in the staffroom to work on before school and during breaks. We also received many beautiful squares from Mrs Leddy’s mum.

We were thrilled to smash our goal, with 340 squares making 17 blankets! Each blanket includes a heart square representing our school and the love we want to share with the whānau who receive them.

Last Friday, Whaea Leonie, Mrs Cooper and four Year 12 students delivered the blankets to Waikato NICU. Ten NICU staff welcomed us with a mihi and karakia to bless the blankets. It was a very special moment, and the mum of a baby who has been in the NICU for over 150 days chose the first blanket. All 17 blankets are now keeping babies in the unit warm and loved.
