Student Attendance

We expect students to maintain at least a 95% attendance rate. Please read this information here to assist your understanding of the importance of punctuality and attendance at school.

Like you, we believe the safety of our students is paramount. To ensure their safety at all times, it is critical that all parents/caregivers and students follow the school’s attendance and absence processes outlined below.

If you have any questions regarding attendance or absence, please get in touch with the Student Centre.

Late to School

All students must sign in at the Student Centre and go directly to their timetabled class. They are marked absent from class until they arrive in class. Accurate attendance data helps ensure the safety of all.

Leaving for an Appointment

As an example, this may be a doctor or dentist appointment. Students must sign out and also sign back in on their return at the Student Centre. Please endeavour to pre-advise the school of any out-of-school appointments. If prior advice from a parents/caregiver has not been received, the Student Liaison Team will contact them before allowing sign-out.

Sick or Injured at School

Students must report to the Student Centre. A member of the Pastoral team will assist them and notify a parent/caregiver as required.

Senior Students

Senior students have the discretion to leave school during break times only, ensuring they punctually return for class. Apart from Year 13 students, no one may leave the school grounds during the school day, unless participating in a school EOTC event.

Student Absence

All student absences need to be explained by parents/caregivers in advance, unless in extenuating circumstances.

Unplanned

We acknowledge there are times when a student has a justified reason to not attend school on any given day eg. illness. A parent/caregiver must contact the Student Centre as soon as possible to notify of the absence, including full name, the reason for the absence and length of time if known. If it is for medical reasons then a medical certificate will be requested.

Planned

If your daughter will be absent from school during the day for any reason, please email the Student Coordinator:  absences@shgcham.school.nz or phone the school 856 7874 option 1, giving a reason for her absence. A medical certificate will be requested if this absence extends beyond 3 days. If whaanau are planning for their daughter to be away from school for an extended period of time (beyond 5 days), for reasons other than medical, a request for permission to be absent from school must be made to the Principal in advance. Please email her PA, Ms Ritchie at pa@shgcham.school.nz explaining the reason for her absence, dates and plans to mitigate missed learning before the absence commences.
